I was going to say Knights of Sydonia, but in not sure all of those are strictly followed. At least there’s nothing overt. And a fantastic sci-fi to boot.

Edit: started re-watching on a lark and there’s A LOT more overt fan service than I remembered. At least it passes the Bechdel Test.

Campfire cooking in another world and Welcome to demon school, Iruma-kun! are my main recommendations. There’s also some trash that would fit your criteria, but I wouldn’t recommend watching that (like that one slime tamer anime I can’t recall the title of). Also a dozen or so otome villainess reincarnation anime should fit your criteria, those are getting pretty popular now, though I haven’t watched any of the anime yet. Also some older stuff like Inuyasha might be up your alley, but honestly it’s been too long since I’ve seen them in their entirety, so I can’t really remember. Obviously Isekai is by far the most fan service-y theme in every possible way since most of it leans into power fantasy aspects to flatter the target demographic. In fact, if this was an actual honest question, I would recommend looking at the broader fantasy category, where there is a lot more variety and quality to be found.

Frieren is the obvious recommendation, with character-driven storytelling focused on philosophical themes. It is genuinely one of the best shows I’ve seen and it’s rare that my expectations for a manga adaptation are blown out of the water so completely. Delicious in Dungeon is also excellent and has more of a focus on little details and creatures (and food, of course) with a very different approach to storytelling and a smaller scope.

I’m a big fan of the comedy and character design in Helck, even if the production quality of the anime can’t quite match up to my other recs. The manga is definitely visually superior. The contrast between the darker aspects of the story and the comedic delivery is pretty unique as well.

Mushishi is an episodic seinen anime focused on mythology and has some of the most beautiful background art, though it has more of a historical setting with supernatural fantasy elements. If virtual fantasy settings are allowed, then I recommend Shangri-La Frontier, which looks like Isekai at first glance, but thankfully is not. It’s also by far the most shonen anime on this list, but very entertaining.

Those are what comes to mind, but I’m sure I’m missing some obvious picks.

I’m waiting for the canonical reason why the female elves look like children while the one male elf we’ve met is drawn like a grown man. And I really hope it’s not that their brain outpaces their body because then we’re in the “5000 year old witch in a child’s body” trope.

If this is addressed in the manga, no spoilers plz beyond a simple “Yes, it is.”

One reason might be that the male elf is a physical fighter who is literally shown doing strength exercises, there isn’t really a good way to make him look like a minor (or rather, like a link/legolas-type male elf or generic anime hot guy character) without making him look a lot weaker. Meanwhile the female elves are both wizards, so their physical shape doesn’t impact their combat ability at all.

And IMO, the main character doesn’t look like a child, she’s just an adult woman who is kind of short and not that curvy.

The issue is we’ve encountered so few elves that it’s impossible to say really anything about them as a whole. Maybe that is just how female elves look, maybe frieren and serie are just weird, or something else. But either way, we’re basically just going on what little we’ve been shown which could change later.

Personally though, I don’t actually mind the 1000 years old but looks like a child trope if it’s not using it as an excuse to sexualuzed the character. Which they really aren’t doing here.

And on the other hand, I also don’t think Frieren looks like a kid. This is pretty common, I’ll see people point out a character who’s a bit short and sometimes flat (though that’s not always the case even) and say that they look like a kid while I don’t see it. So I don’t know if it’s me or what. Serie does look more like a kid to me though.

But we get back to the fact that she’s not being sexualuzed anyway, so again, I don’t personally take issue with it.

Depending on how little violence you want, here’s a few. I’ll put a star on ones that had absolutely no violence (to my recollection)

Steins;Gate (I don’t recall much gore, although some characters do die)

      Vivy: Fluorite Eyes Song

      Hyouka ⭐

      Belle

A Silent Voice (no gore, but references to suicide)

ACCA: 13 Territory Inspection Dept. (one character gets shot at one point and ends up in the hospital. It’s not violent so much as dramatic)

      Mushishi ⭐

Your Lie In April (no gore, but there is death)

      Nichijou (horrific violence)

      Sk8 the Infinity ⭐

      Bocchi the Rock ⭐

Haibane Renmei (some violence in the first episode, but super worth watching)

      Planetes (very little violence)

Noir (buncha people die, but there’s never any blood)

      Niea_7

      Serial Experiments Lain

Megalo Box (it’s a show about people punching each other, so as violent as you’d expect from that)

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (very little violence)

      Kyousougiga

      Sonny Boy (very little violence)

      Kiki’s Delivery Service ⭐

-Hey, do you know any Japanese food you could recommend?

-Sure. What are you looking for?

-Anything, as long as it doesn’t have rice or soy in it.

    -… here you go.

Asking for anime without the idolization of young female beauty is just entitled ethnocentrism. It’s part of Japanese culture. Unless you are living in Japan, you don’t get a say in their culture. Asking for art that only displays scenarios that fit your normative views is an entitled misunderstanding of the purpose of art/craft, both as an expression and as a product. If you need your world filtered so you experience only things that reinforce your worldview, you might as well move to a compound in the woods, because that’s the only way you’re going to avoid all the people who don’t share your beliefs.

Actually you do if you pay for anime. Sucks to live in a capitalist society, but this is one thing that results from it – you vote with your wallet. And by the way, you obviously have a very narrow view of Japan if you think that this is a deep-set part of the culture. For one thing, it’s not hard to find Japanese media without those things, and for two, such things offend the sensibilities of many Japanese people I know.

It’s part of a Japanese subculture. And it’s actually part of a subculture in western countries too, since they exported it. Western fans ask for that kind of stuff just like Japanese fans do. This is why you see it even in, say, Netflix-produced anime.

All she asked for was some anime without excessive fanservice, suited for a younger audience, and your reaction was, “YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND, IT’S ART.”

What a narrow view of the medium. Imagine telling all the Japanese female fans that if they want different representation, they’re being ethnocentric. You want an anime without panty shots and lolis? THE ENTITLEMENT. You are the one who seems to be asking for art that only displays scenarios that fit your ideals, not OP.

Anime doesn’t sexualise underage people, because until the 2023 age of consent in Japan was 13. It’s 16 now, so for American prudes it’s still underage. Just don’t forget that in most of the world the age of consent is much much lower than in the US.

And if anything, this meme is a cultural appropriation as the American view is being pushed on another culture. If you don’t want to learn about and accept foreign culture - watch Marvell movies instead.

Right, because episodes dedicated to a teenage girl’s underwear and chest don’t sexualize them, of course. (/s)

I’ve lived in Japan and seen middle aged men take analog photos of the short-skirt madoka murals in Akihabara. It’s sexualizing children and it’s creepy. And don’t get me started on the figurines. EVEN IN MANY anime it’s depicted as creepy.

As much as I fuckin love Frieren they totally sexualize Fern when she’s under 18, though tbh it does feel less gross than usual considering how clothed she is & the weird relationship she has with her master

Frieren is suuuuuper jealous of Fern once she starts developing (with the show repeatedly using camera angles to show it) and Fern’s 18th birthday is in the later half of the first season. It was funny and rather realistic having been around girls that behaved like that, but as an adult man it was obvious the camera had a serious liking of staring at Fern’s chest whenever it could

That trope bothers me too, but basically any anime female is going to look the same anywhere from 12 to 40 due to the way the features are stylized. So, looking for context clues is how you find the age of a character if it’s not explicitly said. Frieren is absolutely treated like, dresses like, and acts like an adult. She’s smaller than a human man, larger than a dwarf or human child, and while she’s infantalized a little by Fern it’s very much in the “how are you this old and still not taking responsibility for x” way.
