The body was found near the top of the mountain after a hiker who discovered it called 911, Stone Mountain Park Police spokesperson John Bankhead said. The hiker did not leave their contact information with dispatchers, Bankhead said.

Bankhead described the body as an adult male, likely in their 20s or 30s. The body was not found on the paths hikers use for climbing up the mountain.

The death is being investigated by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. The body has been taken to the DeKalb County medical examiner’s office to determine the cause of death.

I don’t mean to imply anything here, but is it common to find a body, call 911, then bug out without giving any contact info?

Is it weird that I think the vast majority of people would want to stick around to see what was happening, at least?

If I found a body, I’d be interested in what happened, and why. If I found a burnt body in the wilderness, I’d probably not want to fuck off into that same wilderness alone with, perhaps, a survivalist murderer lurking. I’d probably wait for the authorities, since there’s safety in numbers. Maybe that’s just me?

There are valid reasons why someone wouldn’t want to stick around and talk to the cops. They could be undocumented, they could have priors, or they could (justifiably) be worried that the cops might consider them a suspect when they’re not.

When Jacob Wetterling went missing, a guy who lived close to the crime scene publicly asked why the sheriff’s department never interviewed him. They responded by naming his as a person of interest and harassing him for 27 years until they arrested the actual perpetrator.

Or get the fuck back to your car and out of there as fast as possible away from the survivalist murderer?
